Sometimes, the best way to get the most out of nature is to bring some of it indoors!

Science has proven that living near greenery and vegetation can have profoundly positive effects on your health.

And a great way to ensure that you get your daily dose of greenery is to keep a few houseplants around the house, which can lower stress levels, improve air quality, and heighten your sense of well-being and connectedness..

Some plants demand their keepers’ thumbs to be a bit greener than others, but many require little to no maintenance to become lush, beautiful, and just the touch of nature you need to make your home a space of therapy, beauty, and tranquility.

Below are five low-maintenance houseplants you can add to your home today.

Fiddle Leaf Fig

This is one of the most popular Ficus plants. A part of the mulberry and fig family, this plant needs to be watered only two to three times a week but needs bright, direct sunlight in a place that is free of cool drafts. Its broad, thick leaves carry a nice shimmer and will bring vigor and charm to any living space.

ZZ Plant

This is the official plant of the band ZZ Top––just kidding! But it is a lovely perennial that can thrive in low light and go up to four months without water. Native to Africa, this plant is glossy, hardy, and exotic. It is mildly toxic to animals and people, causing digestive irritation, so it’s best to keep it in a place animals and small children can’t reach.

Yucca Cane

Native to Mexico and Guatemala, this plant enjoys partly shaded areas and dry, drained soil. You need to water it only once every ten days. It is a member of the succulent family and boasts long leaves that grow from a single cane, hence its name.

Rubber Plant

Also known as the rubber tree and rubber fig, this plant offers a delightful twist on the traditional idea of indoor greenery. Its leaves are often a darker shade of green, infused with notes of red and purple, bringing a moody or stately vibe to any room. It likes medium light and requires watering once a week.

Tufted Airplant

If you want a burst of color with your greenery, this is the plant for you. Like a frozen colorful fountain, this plant has long, narrow leaves that curl outward in a flowering fashion, giving way to a bursting bloom of red, yellow, or purple at its central peak. Make sure it has lots of bright, direct sunlight and moist soil. Provide water once a week.
