Here are more short-term therapy success stories!

We love to highlight these individuals as much as possible to celebrate their accomplishments and inspire anyone who may be considering inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation for themselves or a loved one.

If you are wondering if short-term rehabilitation would benefit you and your family, take a look at the following success stories!

Betty at Life Care Center of Elyria

Betty sustained a fall that resulted in a hip and spine fracture.

She received a surgical hip repair and replacement and was placed in a cervical collar to stabilize her neck. She was initially treated at hospital and transitioned to Life Care Center of Elyria for rehabilitation.

Upon admission to Life Care, Betty showed decreased strength, balance, coordination, and functional mobility. She had surgical hip precautions that limited her movement, and the cervical collar reduced her neck mobility. She needed assistance with self-care tasks, transfers, and bed mobility. She was also unable to walk.

After physical and occupational therapists completed comprehensive evaluations of Betty’s condition, they formulated and implemented a dynamic, integrated treatment approach and individualized plan of care to help Better regain her independence.

"The therapists were very knowledgeable. The therapists were wonderful, patient, and knowledgeable. They were encouraging, and I tried everything that they asked. I would definitely come back here if I needed therapy. I highly recommend!"

Betty made significant progress during her program. By the time of her discharge, she was able to perform all her transfers and functional mobility independently. She was also able to walk over 200 feet and go up and down 10 steps. Her pain had cleared, and she no longer needed the collar.

Congratulations to Betty for all of her success!

Mitch at Berkley Manor Care Center

After a hip replacement, Mitch experienced several hip dislocations, which led him to a short-term therapy stay at Berkley Manor Care Center.

When he arrived, Mitch required heavy assistance with lower body dressing, toileting tasks, bed mobility, and transfers. He needed contact guard support to safely walk 200 feet with a two-wheeled walker, having never used the device before.

In occupational therapy, Mitch focused on retraining his ability to perform activities of daily living, using adaptive equipment to protect his healing hip. He eventually learned to use his equipment like a pro, and his hip remained secure. Speech therapy focused on improving Mitch’s problem-solving abilities and executive functioning, while physical therapy targeted his outdoor gait, bed mobility, and stair stepping ability.

"I will never forget showing Mitch how to use a sock aid to put his sock on independently after he struggled for hours. He thought it was so cool and proceeded to practice 10 more times. It's why I do what I do."  –– Vanna, Occupational Therapy Assistant & Rehab Director

Mitch discharged back to his apartment after a successful month of therapy, where he worked hard to achieve his goals and reclaim his independence. He can now walk indoors with a cane up to 500 feet and take four stair steps independently.

The Berkley team is so proud of Mitch and his short-term rehab progress. He said he would love to come back and volunteer!

Willie at Life Care Center of Saint Louis

Willie came to Life Care Center of Saint Louis after being treated for a chronic ulcer on his lower leg.

When he arrived, Willie required moderate assistance with lower body dressing, bathing, and toileting tasks. He required minimal-to-moderate assistance with transfers, and he was able to walk with a walker with moderate assistance up to 50 feet.

His occupational therapy program helped him improve his upper body strength, balance, functional ability, and safety with activities of daily living. In physical therapy, Willie worked on gait training, balance training, and strengthening his lower extremities.

Willie discharged home with his family after meeting his goals and regaining his strength. He is now independent with all activities of daily living and walks with a walker without assistance.

"My stay has been very helpful. I am able to care for myself now and walking independently. I am so happy to be returning home."

Congratulations to Willie on completing his short-term rehabilitation program! For more information on short-term therapy services at Life Care Center of Saint Louis, call 314-771-2100.
